Seven brothers and sisters. All of them classically trained musicians. One was Young Musician of the Year and performed for the royal family. The eldest has released her first album, showcasing the works of Clara Schumann. These siblings don’t come from elite music schools, but from a state comprehensive in Nottingham. How did they do it?

In House of Music, mother and former University Lecturer Kadiatu Kanneh-Mason discusses the power of determination, camaraderie and hard work as she examines what it takes to raise a musical family in a Britain divided by class and race and why we must do all we can to nurture our children.

Tonight’s event will be accompanied by musical interludes from Konya Kanneh-Mason on the piano. Konya is currently studying at the Royal Academy of Music

Kadiatu Kanneh-Mason was born in Sierra Leone but moved to Wales as a young girl. She lectured in English at the University of Birmingham. Both she and her husband played musical instruments to a high standard, but never pursued professional careers.

Chaired by composer Roxanna Panufnik.

Running time: 60 minutes
